REC emissions calculation update July 22, 2026

We are making a correction to how EnergyCAP calculates emissions records for Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) that will take effect with the July 22 release.

What is changing

EnergyCAP uses the Use - Green/Renewable bill line type to automatically generate a negative emissions record representing a REC. Currently, if an emissions source has multiple scope categories and factors assigned, EnergyCAP creates a REC record for each category/factor pair — including location-based ones.

After this update, REC emissions records will only be created for market-based scope categories. This is the correct behavior, as RECs are a market-based instrument and should not offset location-based emissions.

Who is affected

This change affects you if:

• You use the Use - Green/Renewable bill line type on any bills, and
• Your linked emissions source includes a location-based scope category and factor

If your REC tracking uses only market-based factors, no action is needed and your emissions records will continue to generate correctly.

What to do before July 22

Review your emissions sources linked to any meter using the Use - Green/Renewable line type.

If you have questions about your setup or how this change may affect your emissions reporting, contact EnergyCAP Support before the July 22 release.

After the release

To update existing records generated under the previous behavior, you have two options:

• Unlink and relink the meter and emissions source to regenerate the records correctly, or
• Download the affected emissions records and update them in bulk using Setup Spreadsheets
