Commodity overview

Last updated July 6, 2026

A commodity is the type of resource tracked by a meter—such as electricity, natural gas, water, or non-utility resources like telecom. Commodities control how meters are grouped in reports, how use data is compared across vendors, and how emissions factors are applied. EnergyCAP includes over 50 commodities, and each meter is assigned one when it is created.

If none of the built-in commodities fit your needs, you can create a custom commodity. Custom commodities work just like built-in ones—they can be assigned to meters, tracked on bills, and included in reports.

Commodities and units

Each commodity has a rollup unit—the standard unit used when aggregating use data across meters for reporting. A rollup unit is needed because different vendors may bill the same commodity in different units (for example, natural gas billed in CCF by one vendor and MCF by another). EnergyCAP converts use data to the rollup unit so reports and comparisons are consistent.
